Interfacing MFJ's Giant Meter to MB-1

The meter movement from MFJ's Giant SWR/Wattmeters is a 200 uA meter movement, and can easily be interfaced to MB-1. Below we show a simple mounting arrangement using an acrylic picture frame. After mounting the meter, it is calibrated with MB-1's Panel Meter calibration routine using 40 points for the power scale (the top power meter scale is used for a full scale of 20, 200, and 2000 watts), and 40 points for the SWR scale (SWR = 1.0 to 5.0).

Steps:

  1. A hole saw is used to cut the large opening in the picture frame to accommodate the coil assembly section of the meter movement, and four small holes are drilled to line up with the mounting screws. The meter is then mounted using four 4-40 nuts.

  2. The MB-1 Panel Meter Setup routine is entered. We used Panel Meter port 3 in this example. (Panel Meter ports 1 and 2 are used for the internal crossneedle meter). Calibration is nearly identical to the steps shown here.

  3. The simulator is shown exercising the meter. In this example, the simulator is set up to generate power samples in the range 0 - 2000 watts, and SWR samples in the range 2.50 - 3.50.
